Many people associate brown sugar to brown rice, pasta, and bread and think it is a healthier option than white sugar. Brown sugar can be made from unrefined sugar or most often by adding molasses to refined sugar. One oz. of brown sugar contains slightly less calories than white sugar. One cup of brown sugar contains more calories than white sugar since brown sugar has smaller crystals and packs more densely. Molasses in brown sugar can contain a small amount of minerals but due to the very low amount, it does not provide any health benefits.
